Reimagining Assignments: Refine Editing Skills Via Grading

This is a possible reimagined approach to an assignment.

Overview of assignment

After creating a list of possible topics and rubrics, teachers will ask students to create an AI essay (e.g. "The effectiveness of ChatGPT as a writing tool") and grade it, providing specific feedback justifying each of the scores on the rubric. This assignment might be paired with asking students to create their own essay responding to the same prompt.

Here's the detailed process:

1. Teacher creates a list of essay topics, for example:

    • The role of ChatGPT in enhancing students' writing skills and overcoming writer's block.
    • The effectiveness of ChatGPT in assisting non-native English speakers with writing.
    • The impact of ChatGPT on students' writing productivity and time management.

2. Teacher generates or creates a grading rubric for essays and gives it to students to use to manually grade the essay.

3. Student chooses from a list of potential essay topics given by the teacher. Student Prompt Example: "Write an essay on the effectiveness of ChatGPT as a writing tool. 1000 words."

4. ChatGPT creates the essay.

5. Student grades essay using rubric given by teacher and provides specific feedback justifying each of the scores.

6. Students write their own essay responding to the same prompt.

7. Students put ChatGPT essay, grading and their own essay into a document and submit it to the teacher.

Please note that you should inform your students that if they are going to use AI to generate content, they are responsible for their own work. The AI in rare situations can “hallucinate” or make things up. So students should take every piece of advice or explanation critically and evaluate that advice.
